Janssen and UC San Diego Are Joining Forces to Fight Chagas Disease. Under the warm Southern California sun, a 15-minute walk helps bridge the gap between Big Pharma and Academia as two organizations are working together to help eradicate Chagas disease that, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, affects more than eight million people in Central America, Mexico and South America, and is making inroads into to the United States and other parts of the world.

Imagine a biotech company that pledges not to make money. That’s what a San Diego chemist, Marco Biomonte, has done. His non-profit biotech specializes in neglected tropical diseases. Company's unique mission: to develop tests that detect whether someone is infected with worms. The test for river blindness and loaisis would really fill a need, according to Dr. James McKerrow, the dean of UC San Diego’s Skaggs School of Pharmacy.

In July 2014, Dr. James H. McKerrow became only the second dean of the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, which opened its doors to its first class in the fall of 2002.
