Dr. McKerrow brings an eclectic and interdisciplinary background to his role as Center Director. He received his PhD from the University of California, San Diego, focusing on peptide chemistry. Instead of the traditional career track to a postdoctoral fellowship, he entered medical school at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. After receipt of his MD, he undertook postgraduate training in internal medicine and pathology, and worked for half a year as a family practitioner at the South Brookhaven Health Clinic in New York. Following board certification in pathology at the University of California, San Francisco, he did a postdoctoral fellowship with Dr. Zena Werb in protease biochemistry and cell biology. He has been a leader in the field of parasite biochemistry and molecular biology since 1985, and was the 2009 recipient of the Gregor Mendel Honorary Medal. Since July 2014, James McKerrow serves as a Dean of the UC San Diego Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
